Leading Remote Teams

Enhance your leadership to engage remote teams in these five bite-size 2-hour leadership modules. Each can be run independently:

Module 1: Leading in a Remote Working Environment

Virtual teams present a unique set of challenges, but also a unique set of opportunities. In this course we will review some common challenges and opportunities that face virtual teams and some suggested strategies for addressing those challenges and capitalising on the opportunities.

You will leave with the skills and tools necessary to develop a plan for addressing challenges and opportunities on your own virtual and remote teams.

Course Objectives

This course will:

  • Enable you to understand the advantages and challenges that your team face by working remotely.
  • Provide you with approaches that will help you to focus on the quality and quantity of communication between all team members.
  • Allow you to explore how focussing on social interaction and motivation will enable you to increase productivity whilst counteracting the effects of remote working loneliness.

Module 2: Engaging Inclusive Remote and Hybrid Teams

As remote and hybrid working evolves it is imperative for leaders and managers to develop their skills in engaging a remote workforce. Virtual teams present a unique set of challenges, but also a unique set of opportunities.

This course will help you enhance the communication and motivation of your virtual and hybrid teams. This builds on the first module which will provide you with the framework for effective virtual and hybrid teams to operate.

Course Objectives

This course will:

  • Enable you to understand the advantages and challenges that your team face by working remotely.
  • Provide you with approaches that will help you to focus on the quality and quantity of communication between all team members.
  • Allow you to explore how focussing on social interaction and motivation will enable you to increase productivity whilst counteracting the effects of remote working loneliness.

Module 3: Leading Collaborative Virtual Teams

Conflict in a team is unavoidable and necessary. In this course, you will explore strategies to encourage constructive conflict and to discourage destructive conflict. You will also explore recommended negotiation techniques for managing conflict.

You will then identify threats to communication, as well as exploring strategies to overcome those threats. Moving forward, these strategies will prove invaluable for your own remote teams.

One of the biggest challenges of a remote team is figuring out who has what information and how to get it. You will identify strategies to manage information to help make decisions.

By the end of this course you will also have a toolbox of tips and strategies for maximising the team’s communication.

Course Objectives

On this course you will:

  • Assess and rate the type of conflict on your remote team and reflect on ways to encourage positive and prevent negative conflict.
  • Meet the motivational challenges of individuals and teams.
  • Manage the impact of separation factors including distance, time zones and cultures.
  • Proactively adopt a model that focuses on relationships, communication and tasks.
  • Use a questioning technique to explore the root causes of a conflict facing your team and come up with a plan to fix it.
  • Use negotiation to try to resolve an issue facing your team.

Module 4: Decision Making and Accountability in Virtual Teams

In this course, you will take steps to create a more focused and results-driven remote team that reaches and executes smart decisions. You will also examine common decision traps and biases that teams fall into to try to avoid them. Finally, you will explore strategies for building accountability into decisions so you can more effectively get teams to do what they say they will do.

Course Objectives

On this course you will:

  • Develop a plan for considering more options when making a decision affecting your team.
  • Assess the biases on your team and develop an action plan for addressing the bias that’s most negatively impacting decision-making on your team
  • Assess the impact of group anomalies on your team and develop a plan to address those issues.
  • Compare working together with working apart and plugging the gaps.
  • Factor in the effect of trust amongst team members.

Module 5: Managing Performance in Virtual & Hybrid Teams

As home and virtual working is becoming more necessary it is now imperative for leaders and managers to develop their skills in engaging a remote workforce.

  • Appreciate the advantages and challenges facing your virtual team whilst assessing your own abilities as a remote manager.
  • Provide you with a set of robust tools, models and techniques to achieve effective performance from your team.
  • Allow you to explore how coaching, autonomy and trust can lead to increased productivity, well-being and a more adaptable workforce.
  • Provide you with a safe environment to practice remote coaching or feedback conversations.
